The Search Form

The Search form is displayed in the Document Area when you click on the Search Tab.

  1. To do a simple search for words anywhere in the article, type the words you wish to search for in the top Search field and click the Search Button. This will search the entire archive for the terms you specified. You will then be taken to the Results Tab and shown the articles which matched your criteria.

Note: You can use Advanced Search syntax in any of the text fields except the free text field when paragraph search is selected

  2. To search more specific areas of articles for information, you can select a radio button other than "Article" at the top of the form to restrict the word search to a specific context such as:
    • Quote (a quotation)
    • Dream (a description of a dream)
    • Dialog (a conversation)
    • Reference (the reference or bibliography section; note: the reference section is normally excluded from free-text searches)
    • Paragraph (all the words in the search term must be within 25 words of each other)
  3. The Search Article Properties area of the form allows you to restrict your search by article bibliographic information such as:
    • Author Name
    • Title
    • Year (of publication)
    • Journal Name (using a journal code such as APA, IJP, IRP, PAQ, PD, PI, PSC.)
    • Article Type
  4. At the bottom of the form, you can choose to do a ranked versus an unranked search.  A ranked search uses heuristics (such as number of occurrences of matches in an article) to set the order of the results so that the articles likely to be most relevant are at the top of the list
  5. Use the "Show Context" pull-down option menu to select whether to show more than the default bibliographic information in the results list.  For example, selecting 10 words shows 10 words of the article context before and after each match in the results list.

After doing a search, remember that you can use TOC Sync to expand the table of contents to the same location that you are at in the document.
