Advanced Search


You can enter advanced queries into the text areas of the Search Form except when the radio button "Paragraphs" is selected.  Note that capitalization and punctuation are never considered in a search (even in phrase searches when enclosed in quotes).

Advanced Search Syntax

Type Operator Example Syntax Definition
Term Operators - Use these to modify the way PEP WWW matches a term
Wildcard Multiple Characters * Rul* Finds words beginning with "rul" (rule, rulings, rules)
Wildcard Single Character  ? th?n Finds articles containing words starting with letters t, h, any other character, and n, in that order (than, thin, then)
Thesaurus $ paranoia$ Finds articles containing words matching paranoia or synonyms of paranoia such as anxiety, apprehension.  Note: this is a common language thesaurus, not the Psychoanalytic specific one found on PEP CD Archive 1. 
 
Boolean Operators - Use these to join terms together in a more specific search
All Terms AND Freud and Ego Finds articles where both words occur
& Freud & Ego Finds articles where both words occur
Any Term OR Freud OR Maslow Finds articles with either 'Freud' or 'Maslow'
| Freud | Maslow Finds articles with either 'Freud' or 'Maslow'
Not Term Not Freud Not Ego Finds articles where 'Freud' occurs but not 'Ego'
^ Freud^Ego Finds articles where 'Freud' occurs but not 'Ego'
Phrase Searching
Phrase Search "" "Separation Anxiety Disorder" Finds the exact phrase (ignores capitalization and punctuation)
Proximity Search ""/# "tax code"/10 Finds words "tax" and "code" with ten or less words in between and with "tax" preceding "code"
Unordered Proximity Search ""@# "Internal Revenue Code"@10 Finds words "Internal","Revenue", and "Code" with ten or less words inbetween and with words appearing in any order
