Using "Checked Branches" to Search or Print

The CD-ROM uses the latest version of Folio Views, which comes with a new feature which allows you to limit the scope of a search or select one or more articles to print by placing check marks next to the articles that you want to include in the search.

You can limit the search to only those articles or sections (the branch in the contents pane) that are checked.

Generate/check.gif  Check the articles or portions of articles by clicking on the empty square of the Bibliography pane to create your checked branch.

By doing so, the box "Limit Search to Checked Branches" will automatically be checked. This is now your checked branch. You can check as many branches as you like, they are retained until you clear them or until you close the application.

Only the Checked branches in the left bibliography screen will be searched if the Limit Search to Checked Branches is checked.

Once you have checked some entries, you can enter a search using any of the search tools. If you use the Advanced Search dialog or the Search by Context dialog, then you must make sure "Limit Search to Checked Branches" is checked in the dialog.

NOTE:      After you use this feature, or after you print using the new print section feature, you must CLEAR your selections using the Edit menu option. "Clear All Checks" (or right click on the Bibliography pane of any tab and select "Clear All Checks")

NOTE: Uncheck the box "Limit Search to Checked Branches" on the Search by Context dialog at the bottom of the screen, if you decide instead to temporarily search the entire database, but do not want to omit the selections you have made.

Checked branches can be conveniently used to print one or more articles. When you bring up the print dialog (see below) any Checked Branches in the Bibliography (Contents) Pane will be checked in the "Section" list. As you can see in the illustration, whereas the dialog refers more generically to sections, at the top level each section corresponds to an article. You can also unfold an article that has subsections and print only a subsection of the article.

To print the currently check branches, select the "Section" radio in the print dialog as shown in the illustration.

NOTE: you can check additional articles to print from this dialog, or deselect articles that were already checked to exclude them from the print job.

IMPORTANT: The "Section" button is selected (and your printer is ready and configured), and then press OK.

NOTE      There is a bug in the Views 4.2 application, used for the PEP CD-ROM, such that after you close the print dialog, you won't see the sections you selected checked in the Bibliography pane. However, if you used the print by section feature of the print dialog, those "checks" are in effect for the search as well. Thus, after printing and using the "Section" feature of the print dialog, you must use the Clear All Checks feature to clear the checkmarks before you search.
