The PEP CD: Terms of Sale and Technical Requirements
Registration - Hard Drive Install - Technical Requirements - Institutional and Library Users - Copyright Obligations
The PEP CD has security controls to protect PEP's and the Journal's copyrights. After installing the PEP CD on your computer, you have fifteen days to register the license with PEP. After 15 days the article infobase will no longer open until you register the license. Directions for either email or telephone methods of registration are explained on this website in the section under Register and License and in the PEP License Registration Help File on the CD which will be installed to your PC.
The Archive 1v6 is downloaded to your hard drive for fast access so that there is no need to carry the CD. To use it you will need about 1 GB free space on your hard drive (HD).
A. Apple Macintosh: Unfortunately the PEP CD will not work on computers using the Mac operating system. Mac users are advised to have a web subscription which works with a browser and poses no problems for the Mac OS.
B. Microsoft Windows Vista : Microsoft Windows recent update to their Vista system was released after the production of the PEP Archive 1v6. The Folio Views software used for the Archive 1v6 was not developed for Vista . Present information is that a new installation of Vista on an entirely new computer will work satisfactorily but requires some user intervention at installation. There might be problems if VISTA is installed on an old computer, on top of a previous operating system. PEP does not recommend installing VISTA on an old computer and then trying to run the CD. It is at customers own risk. Click here for more information about the PEP CD and Vista.
C. Microsoft Windows (except Vista ): PEP Archive 1v6 uses an upgraded Folio Search Engine which has enhancements and is compatible with various 32 bit versions of Windows. It will run on Windows 98/98SE, Windows NT 4.0 (SP6 and newer) Windows 2000 (SP2 and newer) and XP (SP2 and newer) with at least 128 MB RAM memory. See above or Click here for information about compatibility with Microsoft Vista. Given how the amount of memory affects the general speed of the platform, even more memory is better (256 to 512 MB recommended). At least SVGA (800x600) with a 256 colors display is required, XGA or better resolution is recommended (Folio can take advantage of whatever screen space you have available--with more screen space, you will be able to see more of the text at one time. Only Version 1 of the PEP Archive 1 will run on the older 16-bit Windows 3.x platforms.
D. Hard (HDD) Space: The A1v6 archive is too voluminous to fit on a single CD-ROM; it comes on two CDs, and must be installed to your hard drive for use. At least 1.00 GB (1000 MB) free hard disk space must be available for the installation of this latest PEP Archive. Additional space is required, of course, as sufficient free hard disk space must be available after the install for Windows and applications to use as memory swap space and temporary file space. Running from the HDD has superior speed and efficiency. If you do not have enough HDD space, we would suggest you get a second HDD. If you have a high speed USB2.0 or Firewire port on your computer, it's probably easiest to get an external hard drive. If you do not have USB2.0 or Firewire, you can install one of these interfaces via a PCI card for desktops or a Cardbus (PCMCIA/PC-CARD) card for laptops.
Institutional and Library Users
The higher price paid by institutional and library users carries with it the right to allow several users access to the disc (but not at the same time) and for each to use Study Aids and printing. (It is possible for a library to set up a series of "shadow files" on the hard disc so that each library user may have their own Study notes. Details about these procedures can be found by consulting, first, the Study Aids section of the PEP-Help manual and, second, the detailed treatment of Shadow Files in the Help system which comes with Folio Views 4.0.)
